Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Contamination

We’re in the middle of trying to get to the bottom of the poisonings at Camp Lejeune. I’ve heard this story all my life, because Dad was there. We never knew that anything new had come of it. Benny was there at the same time Dad was, during the contamination and they both ended up having colostomies. What I’ve learned is that they are claiming that they have tried to contact everyone who may have been exposed. But no one that we know who was there found out they were exposed because they were contacted by those who poisoned them, they found out via media reports. Even Jerry Ensminger didn’t find out until he saw it on the tele. We managed to find an old buddy of Dad’s who was also there, to help try to figure out a timeline and exactly where he was and how long he was exposed. That guy was not notified either.

Dad’s calling Kabatchnick again today, maybe we’ll find out more.

During all of this, I found out the real reason for my Uncle Lewis’ death… he was an atomic veteran; was involved in bomb tests in the Pacific. He told Dad during the tests he looked over at the guy next to him and could see his bones (creepy). Then he promptly developed bone cancer and died. Nobody ever answered for that either. And… the researchers all had suits. But my uncle and the other men did not have protective suits. Surprise, surprise.

—SNIPPETS—
In May, the Government Accountability Office told the subcommittee that the IRIS database is at risk of becoming obsolete because the EPA takes too long to assess the health risks of substances. The EPA had a backlog of 70 incomplete assessments, according to the report.

One of the chemicals caught in the backlog is TCE, or trichloroethylene, which many experts consider a carcinogen and is one of the chemicals that persisted in the Camp Lejeune water supply. According to the charter for the subcommittee’s hearing, the EPA originally developed a cancer assessment for TCE in the late 1980s, but it was withdrawn. Another draft was completed in 2001, but it became embroiled in controversy and went nowhere.

Nearly 20 years later, the EPA still has not completed a cancer assessment for TCE. Yet another draft will not be finalized until 2010.
