DRM/SecuROM

I have removed the two references to Spore from this site because of SecuROM. Any software that comes packaged with DRM will not be linked to or supported on this website. (At least not by me, I’m not responsible for the opinions of others.)

And yes, Amazon Unbox fucked up my computer. Had to reinstall Windows.

I spend a great deal of my time avoiding badware and for the most part have been successful. I use HOSTS to block known badware sites, I use a good antivirus software (not Norton or McCrappy), etcetera.

But because Amazon was a trusted name, and because I couldn’t find what I was looking for ANYwhere else—and I’m not just talking about bittorent: I was willing to purchase the episodes, but again, Amazon Unbox was the sole online place I could find them for purchase.

That’s the only reason I ever installed Unbox in the first place. I should have read the EULA. But I guess I know what “unbox” means now.

Before anyone allows DRM on their computers, I suggest you read the following.

An example of what can happen if you do allow DRM to get its hooks on your box:

Break it! Why? Because you bought it.

Support for ogg: I used to use ogg, but no one else was using the format. None of my friends or family. But after my experience with DRM, and the sheer GALL of it, I am going to be supporting ogg on this site. Basically proprietary software/formats that use DRM (or otherwise piss me off) won’t be getting support from this site.

If you’re interested in ogg, or haven’t heard of it, here:

DRM is not just an inconvenience, it threatens to delete ANY “unlicensed” media on your computer, not just those that you may have purchased from them, but ANY media it believes you lack a license for—at least this is the threat they use to scare ppl from uninstalling Unbox.

In the event that you are looking for something and discover that Amazon Unbox is the sole means by which you can purchase your coveted media, think twice. Is it worth risking the security and operability of your entire computer?

At the very least, back up all your files first, especially your media.

Don’t allow another penny to be spent in support of DRM. It only encourages it. Rights, once lost, are very hard to get back once you’ve lost them. I hear rumors now that DRM is going to be packaged with a lot of games, not just the Spore/SecuROM situation.

I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to respond to DRM, but I never had to before because I don’t usually purchase media services. But I’m acknowledging it now.

I mean really, who the fuck do these ppl think they are?
